If you're struggling with ideas or the motivation to write then, why not try writing something for a competition? They not only typically provide a topic to write on but also a deadline to work to. Incentives for entering often include a cash prize and some a literary award.

So, let's get some excuses out of the way first.

  • I'll never win - You'll never know if you never try!

  • Competitions are just scams - Granted, there are some scams out there, but most are genuine. Just remember to do your research if it means parting with an entry fee for submitting your work.

  • My writing isn't good enough - competitions are a great way to get you writing. The more you write, you better your writing becomes. Don't put your competitors on a pedestal. We all go through the stage of thinking our writing isn't good enough. Let the judges or panel be the judge of your work and you may well come out on top.

So you've got your fingers poised on a keyboard and ready to get to work but not sure where to start? Here are a few current competitions you might like to try.
