Whether you write for the love of it or for a living, theres always something we can improve upon. As writers, we're lucky that there's a vast array of support and events that can help build our knowledge and skills no matter where you are on the scale of experience.
Being a member of a local writing group got me writing again, and although it has always been encouraging and a good source of writing tips it hasn't always been able to fulfil my thirst for knowledge or provide me with all the skills to help me move forward on my writing journey. That's where attending events comes in.
Events and festivals for writers are a brilliant opportunity to network with other writers and people who can fill those gaps. Here's some information on some of the upcoming events.
The Abergavenny Writing Festival is being held at The Kings Arms in Abergavenny on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th April. Panels and speakers will be held to encourage people to write and provide information on things such as publishing in the digital age and copyright law. Penny Ellis, an author of several novels and member of our writing group will also be a panel member on the debate "Do we all have a novel in us?". There is also a writers retreat day being held at St Mary's Priory on Saturday 13th April to provide advice and support, or just to allow you a peaceful setting in which to work on your current project. Ross Writers are holding an event on 9th May at The Royal Hotel in Ross-on-Wye with Debi Alper, a successful author of contemporary thrillers who will be leading a workshop on voice, point of view and psychic distance. For more information, you should contact jane.e.ayres@me.com.
The Hay Festival is now infamous and held every year at Hay-on-Wye. This year's festival will be held between the 23rd of May and 2nd June. Events this year include to the chance to sit in on talks with the current winner of the Man Booker International Prize and to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 'The Gruffalo ' with its author Julia Donaldson. These are just a few of the many different events and workshops available throughout the year that provide not just the opportunity to network but improve your skills and knowledge. If you're feeling stuck they can also provide inspiration to get you back on track and spark new ideas. I know I always come back enthused and ready to write another chapter after attending such events.
