The Perfect Gift

It's that time of year again and this Christmas our writing group is celebrating the 1st anniversary of our website and blog!

It's been an eventful year for everyone with many ups and downs, but again we've supported each other and encouraged one another to carry on with our writing journey. Last year we saw our group dwindle as we had to say goodbye to a number of well-loved and respected members. This year we have been blessed with welcoming new members that are already contributing to our monthly sessions with well-written pieces.

Writing for the majority is a solitary thing, even if you manage to write amongst the hustle and bustle of a coffee shop, the chances are you do so whilst sitting alone. You could say it's the nature of the beast, but that doesn't mean you have to be a hermit.

I joined Monmouth Writers about 5 years ago be because I dearly wanted to write again. After years of neglecting my creative brain, I just couldn't seem to get past writing a few paragraphs before giving up on whatever idea had come to mind. But with the support of other writer's within the group I found my creative spark and before long couldn't stop writing or coming up with ideas and have finally finished my first novel. Would I have done it without the support of other writer's? Possibly? But the journey would have been very different.

I wouldn't have received valuable criticism and feedback allowing me to develop and grow, not only as a writer but personally too. Reading and listening to others' work on a regular basis has also made me aware of different writing styles and helped me to find and develop my own writer's voice. It has enabled me to learn about different techniques and useful tips that are invaluable to any writer.

So don't be shy about yourself or your writing, join a local writing group and enjoy the journey with other like-minded people. The best things in life are free and support and encouragement for a writer is the perfect gift any time of year 💝
